Second Amendment under fire

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Today President elect Barack Obama made it official.   Eric Holder will be the next Attorney General of the United States.   With a nearly filibuster proof Senate, Holder will be confirmed.   Supporters of the Second Amendment should be very worried.   Listen to my interview with  Second Amendment  expert David Kopel. Kopel is also the research director at the Independence Institute.   He discusses that Holder’s perspective on individual gun rights is so radical that not one of the nine supreme court justices agreed with his D.C. v Heller amicus brief where he, along with his former boss Janet Reno, argued that gun ownership is a collective right held by the state not the individual.

To learn more about Holder, I also suggest that you read Kopel’s blog post on the Volokh Conspiracy.   You’ll be reminded of such dark  incidents as the “gunpoint, night-time kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez.”   Apparently Holder thinks it’s acceptable for a heavily-armed government to forcibly  remove a young child from his home and return him to an oppressive governemnt so he can serve as a propaganda tool.

Holder also played a key role in the pardon of fugitive Marc Rich. And this man will be the top law enforcement officer of the land. Great.   Law abiding citizens will find it harder to protect themselves while fugitives will be given a free pass.

Should Mayor Ed Clark resign?

Monday, December 1st, 2008

That’s the Greeley Tribune’s question of the week.   This time the Tribune is outraged because Mayor Clark showed a fake  (obviously)  $3 bill  with President-elect Barack Obama in a turban to a University Schools student.   Clark is in charge of security at the Greeley charter school.   Full disclosure, two of my kids attend University.   Apparently the student showed the funny money to other students and a parent complained.   Clark apologized but did say it was just political satire.  Fine. Was it unsensitive? Maybe.   Does it rise to the level of resignation? Hardly.   Even when considering publicity surrounding Clark’s other situations? Again, no.

Obviously the Tribune and I don’t agree on this issue but what I find amazing is that the Tribune considers Weld County District 3 Commissioner elect Barbara Kirkmeyer’s probable violation of state statute a mere “bump in the road.”   So unethical and probably illegal behavior garners Kirkmeyer an endorsement from the Tribune while political satire and disciplining a spoiled, foul-mouthed teenager gets Clark a suggestion to resign.   Impressive.
